Master of Engineering Management (MEM) (CTO direction)

I. Training Concept

The Master of Engineering Management in the ECNU was established in 2021. The Shanghai International School of Chief Technology Officer, a physical teaching and research institution of the ECNU, is responsible for enrollment and training. With the core value concept of “Business Boosts Technology to Change the World” as the guiding ideology and the mission of shaping the thinking, capability and pattern of technology and innovation management leaders and cultivating CTOs with international vision and future technology strategic entrepreneurs, the program aligns with the country’s major strategic needs and cultivates high-level compound innovation leaders with solid professional foundation, rich practical experience, excellent management ability, insight into industrial development and global vision through the integrated industry and education practice teaching and case teaching in combination with the characteristics of the development of technology industry.

II. Training Objectives 

The training goal of the program is to adapt to the demand of China's science and technology innovation development strategy for high-level talents for artificial intelligence, integrated circuits, biomedicine and a number of strategic emerging industries and cultivate talents that have good political and ideological quality and professional ethics, master systematic modern engineering management theories and methods, have solid technology transfer and achievements transformation ability, advanced management science ideas, open and active critical and creative thinking, integrated humane accomplishment of science and technology, and global vision and crossover and cross-field lateral thinking ability and outstanding organization management and technology leadership, and can act as technology management leaders in technology enterprises and grow into strategic technology entrepreneurs in the future.

The specific training objectives are the following five aspects

  • Technical leadership

  • Global vision and technology trend insight

III. Training direction of the program

Two training directions are set for this major

CTO MEM Senior Program 

  • Thinking improvement and pattern shaping of CTO or Quasi-CTO

  • Science and engineering master’s degree or above, corporate executive position, about 10 years working experience.

  •  Education resources: EMBA standards, famous teachers at home and abroad, in-depth study and discussion and industry resource platform docking.

CTO MEM Elite Program

  • Cultivate excellent CTO talents for the future technology industry.

  • Science and engineering undergraduates or master’s degree, middle level position in enterprise, 3-8 years working experience.

  • Education resource allocation: famous teachers inside and outside the university, whole-cycle technical entrepreneurship counseling and whole-process tracking support, segmentation direction based on the technology industry.

Whether or not it is the CTO MEM Senior Program or CTO MEM Elite Program, each student selects new engineering fields such as ultra-limit manufacturing or artificial intelligence and information technology in the study period and takes corresponding elective cutting-edge technology courses in the three major industries of artificial intelligence, integrated circuit and biomedicine as well as several strategic emerging industries to achieve the training goal of industrial characteristics.

IV. Curriculum system

The core module of the curriculum of the Master of Engineering Management program is the structure of “4+X”. “4”is the four modules of the CTO core knowledge and ability system and “X” is the advanced module of professional technology frontier based on CTO technical background.

The CTO core knowledge and capability system consists of four modules: thinking logic, executive capability, technology transfer and business methods.

“X” is the advanced module of professional technology frontier based on CTO technical background. At present, two major directions are determined according to the advantageous fields of science and engineering of the ECNU, namely, artificial intelligence and information technology, and ultra-limit manufacturing, which are oriented to the three major industries of artificial intelligence, integrated circuit and biomedicine and several strategic emerging industries. Take at least three courses as elective courses in each industry field.

2.5-years part-time

VI. Application conditions

Those who have obtained Bachler’s degree and have at least 3 years (including 3 years) working experience after graduation from a state-recognized university;

Those who have obtained a master's degree or doctor's degree and have more than 2 years (including 2 years) working experience;

Those who have at least 5 years (including 5 years) of work experience and reached the same educational level as university undergraduates after graduation from higher vocational colleges recognized by the state.
