On the afternoon of November 23rd, he Appointment Ceremony of Academician Otto C.C. Lin as Honorary Professor of East China Normal University and Academic Symposium “From Laboratory to The Market” were successfully held in the lecture hall of Shanghai International School of Chief Technology Officer (ECNU). Qian Xuhong, academician of the CAE Member and president of East China Normal University, awarded Academician Lin an honorary professor certificate. Xu Yufang, Vice President of Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, Duan Chungang, Minister of Development Planning Department of East China Normal University, Tian Qingfang, Deputy Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Department of East China Normal University, Peng Hui, Professor of School of Physics and Electronic Science of East China Normal University, Yang Chang, Deputy Director of Key Laboratory of Polarized Materials and Devices of the Ministry of Education of East China Normal University, and more than 60 academic staff and students from Shanghai International School of Chief Technology Officer attended the event. The ceremony was presided over by He Jiaxun, Executive Dean of Shanghai International School of Chief Technology Officer.
Academician Qian Xuhong stated in his speech that Academician Lin has extensive knowledge and experience, and has led the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute to play an important role in the critical stage of Taiwan's economic transformation and development. In addition, Academician Lin has served in universities such as the National University of Singapore and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is also an honorary professor at several domestic universities such as Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China, and Xi'an Jiao Tong University. He has outstanding achievements and profound insights in scientific research, technological innovation, and industry university research cooperation. Academician Qian Xuhong expresses sincere gratitude to Academician Lin for his concern and support to East China Normal University.
Academician Lin expressed that he is honored to be appointed as an honorary professor at East China Normal University. He hopes to have more exchanges and learning with our professors and students in the future, and promote cooperation between industry, academia, and research.
After the ceremony, Academician Lin gave an academic report titled "Entanglement and Passion: From the Laboratory to the Market". He used the failed entrepreneurship of 20th century Nobel Prize winner Shockley, the rise and fall of Fairchild Semiconductor Company, the growth of Silicon Valley enterprise teams, and the competition between Intel and Taiwanese semiconductor companies in the past decade as examples to illustrate the complexity and key success factors of the process from laboratory to market. He pointed out that in the process from technological research and development to generating economic value, the three steps of scientific research, technological innovation, and commercialization are closely related but each has different focuses, requiring different psychological reserves and professional skills to execute. To enhance the efficiency of entrepreneurial success, the government should play a leading role, establish a good innovation mechanism in the region, position the role and goals of "industry, government, academia, and research", and actively encourage collaboration to promote the growth of new ventures. The key factors for its success are clear positioning, strategic planning, talent cultivation, and establishment of corporate culture.
In the interactive session, academic mentors in science and technology innovation from CTO School, students of the Master of Engineering Management program, and advanced training students in science and technology entrepreneurship raised questions to Academician Lin on topics such as scientific innovation research in universities, how to gather resources for new material research, and how to coexist with artificial intelligence in the new era. Academician Lin also provided insightful and practical suggestions based on his own experience.
Finally, Academician Qian Xuhong provided a brief summary. He pointed out that since the early 1990s, the Chinese Mainland has established a number of high-tech parks represented by Zhangjiang, taking Taiwan's Hsinchu Science Park as the benchmark. The Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute, which is behind the Hsinchu Science and Technology Park, has incubated numerous semiconductor industry related enterprises such as TSMC. This has also brought us an inspiration that we need to leverage the resource aggregation role of high-tech parks, create more profits, and make greater contributions to society. The society we will face in the future is a technological and commercial society. In this new era, if technicians want to start a company, they must find ways to understand society, either by transforming themselves into managers or by collaborating with managers; For non-technical managers, they need to understand the trends of technological development. From these two perspectives, we may both succeed in a society where technology and the market are not separated. Therefore, the cultivation of talents in science and technology business is crucial, which is the original intention of CTO School to establish a new type of science and technology innovation talent cultivation, and the source of the School's advocacy of establishing the interdisciplinary concept of "Sci-Tech Driven Business".
