Event Review | The 1st Global CTO Conference of Sci-Tech Driven Business in 2023 Technological Changes and Future Innovation

On December 23rd, the "2023 GlobalCTO Conference of Sci-Tech Driven Business" jointly organized by East China Normal University(ECNU)and Southern University of Science and Technology(SUST), hosted by the Shanghai International School of Chief Technology Officer(CTO School)and the SUST-School of  Innovation and Entrepreneurship was held at the Student Activity Center of the ECNU-Minhang Campus. Qian Xuhong, president of East China Normal University and academician of the CAE Member, attended the conference and delivered a speech. The conference invites multiple academicians from China, Australia, Russia and other countries, experts in artificial intelligence technology and applications, technology officers and executives from domestic and global enterprises, as well as master's students in engineering management to gather offline and engage in in-depth exchanges on the theme of "technological changes and future innovation". Liu Yuliang, thedistinguished professor of practiceat CTO School, presided over the conference, and He Jiaxun, the Executive Dean of CTO School, gave a summary of the conference. The conference was simultaneously broadcasted online, attracting over 10000 followers.

Qian Xuhong,president of East China Normal University stated in his speech that recently, East China Normal University and Southern University of Science and Technology officially established a strategic cooperation relationship. The joint hosting of this conference by the two universities is an important attempt and a good start for both sides to work together for talent cultivation and scientific and technological innovation in the country. He stated that the technological revolution is driving significant changes in the education. CTO School has established a master's degree and executive education system in engineering management with the goal of cultivating CTO talents. This educational innovation has changed the value and path of traditional business and management disciplines, and created a new field of "Sci-Tech Driven Business Disciplines" with science and technology innovation talent cultivation as the core. In March of this year, CTO School was also included in the special key task of promoting the construction plan of the "Neo Bay" science and technology innovation source functional area. Finally, he wished all guests,professors,experts and students the opportunity to gain new insights and inspiration at this conference.













With the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, the field of education is also undergoing changes. Professor He Liang, Vice Dean of the School of Computer Science and Technology at East China Normal University, delivered a keynote speech entitled "The Impact of AI Tools such as ChatGPT on Education.". He listed the long-term impact of AI tools on education, including accelerating the arrival of personalized education and promoting the transformation of teaching models from knowledge-based to core competency oriented. He also introduced EduChat, an open-source model in the education field pioneered by East China Normal University. It can use an intelligent teaching method guided by interactive dialogue and a personalized online learning model based on expert feedback to achieve the "evolution of the large model language while dialogue".

Innovative research in bio-pharmaceuticals is a major national development strategy and a frontier in international competition, and artificial intelligence and biopharmaceuticals are both two of the three key leading industries in Shanghai's development. Professor He Xiao from the School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at East China Normal University focused on the large model technology and application in the field of chemistry and delivered a keynote speech titled "ChemGPT1.0 at East China Normal University". He introduced the team's research direction - "molecular intelligence" for biomedicine. This is a new transformation in the field of organic synthetic chemistry, based on high-quality data collection, combined with machine learning and the use of automated synthesis platforms, to achieve efficient and precise molecular creation that is different from traditional synthesis modes. Ding Wenxuan, professor at Emlyon Business School and distinguished professor at CTO School, has been engaged in research on artificial intelligence and smart business for many years. She delivered a keynote speech titled "Decision Making under Generative AI".

In the next session, three academicians from engineering academies from various countries explore the new mission of CTO talent development and cultivation under technological changes from different perspectives such as education, scientific research, and industry.


Liu Ke, Dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at South University of Science and Technology and Foreign Academician of the Australian National Academy of Engineering, gave a keynote speech titled "CTO and Innovation Society Construction", sharing his in-depth thoughts on CTO education.


Ling Wen, academician of the CAE Member, delivered a keynote speech on the topic of Predictive Technology of Strategic Scientists. 


He shared his thoughts on the connotation, extension, progression, and unity of science, technology, and engineering: science is the theoretical foundation of technological development, technology is the method and means of scientific progress, and engineering is a bridge for science and technology to change the world. He believes that the core force of science, technology, and engineering foresight is strategic scientists, which is also the role of CTO. Cross-disciplinary innovation is a quality that CTOs should possess, and it requires systematic thinking as well.


Wang Pinghui, Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering, delivered a keynote speech titled "Future Technology Industry Innovation and Aerospace System Engineering Management". 


He pointed out that the characteristics of future technology driving economic growth are different from the past. Climbing is the key to achieving a "highland economy", and CTO should pay more attention to future technology. He shared innovative practice cases in the future technology industry, such as navigation satellite system testing, verification, and management, based on aerospace system engineering management methods, and proposed his observations on the future technology industry: in the next decade, AI, digitization, low-carbon, and GCH will be the major trends.



In the session of "CTO Talents Cultivation in the AI Era", Song Xibin, Founder of Shandong Sinocera Functional Materials Co., Ltd., Chief Technology Officer, and Director of the National Enterprise Technology Center for New Functional Materials delivered a keynote speech titled " Views on Hard&Core Technology CTO in the AI Era" to the conference. 


He believes that in the era of AI, the development of hard&Core technology faces new opportunities and challenges. At the same time, with the increasing strength of AI, the role of hard technology CTOs is weakening, but the remaining CTOs are becoming increasingly important (such as social, negotiation, sympathy, authenticity, concern, creativity, aesthetics, etc.), making them more difficult to be replaced and will be integrated with AI.



 Professor He Jiaxun, on behalf of CTO School, released a report on the development of artificial intelligence industry technology in Shanghai and Minhang District. 


The report focuses on the development of artificial intelligence industry technology at multiple levels, including national, urban, enterprise, and university levels, from a global perspective through technological decomposition and patent search. It summarized the development of artificial intelligence industry technology in Shanghai and Minhang District in the past two decades, and provided suggestions for the technological development of the artificial intelligence industry in Shanghai and Minhang District.


At the end of the conference, Xu Hao, Director of the Science and Technology Committee of Minhang District, Shanghai, and Yang Fuyi, Vice Dean of the Graduate School of East China Normal University, unveiled the new plague of 7Demonstration Base for Industry-Education Integration of Shanghai International Chief Technology Officer College.
